Fill in your given numbers:
ax² + bx + c = (? + ?)(? + ?)
Factoring quadratics (scientific method)
Factoring a quadratic equation means decomposing a polynomial into the product of its binomials. We did invent an algorithm to find any possible factoring. Three important steps are combined to find a solution:
- Equating coefficients to create a system of linear equations
- Solve that system of linear equations
- Use the pq formula to get the final variable
There are infinite possibilities so that a limitation had to be built in. B is always a natural number.
How to use it
Enter values for a, b and c in all text fields.
The buttons on the left side show the possible symbols you can enter.
To calculate the result with your input press the "="-button.
What does the calculator do?
It might take some seconds before the result shows up.
- Inserts your values.
- Equates coefficients.
- Creates a system of linear equations.
- Chooses B to calculate D.
- Transforms equations.
- Using the pq formula to calculate A.
- Calculates C from the resulting variables.
Your calculation will appear here!
Video introduction
To understand the whole process it is necessary to deal with the applied methods.
Shaelene Stranges provides a quick and clean tutorial how equating coefficients works.
The second method is the solving of a system of linear equations by substitution. Khan Academy made a great video to explain this topic. It also provides some extra examples for a comprehensive understanding.
The last method is the pq formula. Solving Math (hey, that’s me!) provides everything you need to know about it here.
